Can AI Solve America's Addiction Problem?

Can AI Solve America's Addiction Problem?

Artificial intelligence (AI) transformed healthcare, retail, business, and dozens of other industries. And now, it also promises a brighter future for those struggling with addiction.

Those recovering from addiction often use methods from years ago. As everything changes with technology, why haven’t treatment methods also advanced?

Well, now it has.

AI is another tool you can use before, during, and after treatment to help support long-term recovery.

The Current System Has Flaws

Substance abuse is a national issue, with at least half of everyone over 12 using illicit drugs at least once. Even though many organizations are taking strides to support those struggling with addiction or substance abuse disorders, there are still gaps in the system.

The relapse rate is estimated to be between 40-60%.

While the current system has flaws, it isn’t broken. There’s support available for those working toward recovery. And now, AI offers yet another way you can overcome those barriers and join countless others living sober lives.

How AI Can Help Those with Addictions

A significant flaw with current systems is they’re not customized or constant. AI addresses both of these challenges to help you live a sober lifestyle.

AI Customizes Its Approach

While support groups and programs like the 12-step program have incredible benefits and lead many people to recovery, it doesn’t fit everyone’s lifestyle.

Some people respond better to different approaches for motivation and support. Yet, there aren’t many customizable options available.

AI’s secret power is its ability to personalize results with a click of a button. For example, Google search results show places near you and options you’re most interested in. AI analyzes your online behaviors and customizes what you need most.

It can also do that for those struggling with substance use. AI uses data like online searches, location, health symptoms, and other behaviors to offer personalized suggestions to help you avoid triggers and seek timely help.

AI Provides Constant Support

Even if you consider your support group and therapist life savers, they don’t come home with you. They’re not with you when you’re walking alone downtown. Yet, those are often the moments you need that extra support the most.

Your phone, smartwatch, and other digital devices can use AI apps to give notifications, reminders, and suggestions throughout your day. It can motivate you when there’s no one else around to help you stay strong until you seek help.

3 Examples of AI for Addiction

Here are some apps from the past and present that help with addiction recovery and long-term freedom.

Addicaid

Addicaid came out in 2013 as a recovery tracker that uses AI for recovery. People uses the app to track symptoms and connect with healthcare providers. By tracking symptoms, the app could detect where someone was in their recovery. It used common signs like sweats and nausea to predict potential relapses.

The app then provided customized support and coping suggestions to help the app user through their symptoms.

The app is no longer available.

Workit Health

The Workit Health app supports mental health and sobriety so you can achieve long-term recovery. The app offers telemedicine virtual care for substance use disorders and mental health disorders. Most insurance providers cover much of the care.

The app also allows you to take helpful courses, message your care team, and receive medication notifications by using AI for addiction support. Those who use the app have reported fewer mental health struggles and better recovery progress.

SoberTool

SoberTool is a daily check-in AI for sober living app that helps prevent relapse. When you feel a craving, you follow question prompts to input how you’re feeling. The app then gives specific suggestions for stopping the craving and removing yourself from the situation.

You can check in every day with how you’re feeling for suggestions and tips to encourage positive behaviors while avoiding triggers.

The app tracks how long you have been sober and gives rewards for reaching milestones. It can also motivate you with daily messages or tell you how much money you saved by remaining sober.

Combine AI with Your Recovery Plan

Reaching long-term freedom from addiction takes a village. While you have therapists, healthcare providers, and friends, you now also have technology at your disposal.

Take advantage of one or more of these AI apps to help you find long-term recovery.
