Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away from combined drug intoxication on February 2, 2014. One of the most well-known and renowned film actors in America, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s story is a tragic example of how pernicious and difficult drug and alcohol abuse can be, even for an individual who has beaten their addiction in the past.
Hoffman’s career spanned more than two decades, and he appeared in more than 55 films. Among other accolades, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2005 for Capote, and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor three times.
In his younger years, Hoffman suffered from drug and alcohol abuse, particularly during his time studying at New York University. However, he enrolled in a rehabilitation program upon graduating at the age of 22, and he remained sober for the next 23 years.
But in 2013, Hoffman relapsed, and checked himself into rehab for about 10 days. Within a year, he passed away at the age of 46 due to a toxic combination of drugs including cocaine, heroin, amphetamine, and benzodiazepines. Despite his long-time sobriety, he did not get the help he needed after relapsing, and this may have cost him his life.
Amy Winehouse was famous for her iconic appearance and husky, low vocal range, and she was a rising star in the music world. In 2008, her record Back to Black won 5 Grammys, tying the record for the most wins by a female artist.
However, as her profile rose, so did her issues with drugs and alcohol. Winehouse had gone through multiple periods of heavy drug and alcohol use, starting as early as 2005, and these episodes would occur multiple times throughout her career. During these times, she also had legal trouble and was arrested 3 times for assault. In 2008, Winehouse stopped using illegal substances but continued drinking alcohol heavily.
On July 23, 2011, Winehouse passed away from acute alcohol intoxication, with a BAC of 0.416%. Her death was ruled as accidental alcohol poisoning. She was 27 years old.
Heath Ledger was known for his roles in movies like 10 Things I Hate About You, The Patriot and Brokeback Mountain. The Australian actor was a rising star in Hollywood. But only a few months before his latest – and perhaps most renowned – film, The Dark Knight was released, Ledger suffered a fatal overdose at his apartment on January 22, 2008.
Heath Ledger was known to have suffered from problems with addiction in the past. His overdose was ruled an accident, due to abuse of prescription medications including oxycodone, hydrocodone, and diazepam, to name a few. Ledger was only 28 years old.
Widely thought of as one of the most influential guitarists and musicians of all time, Jimi Hendrix was iconic in the late 1960s. His unique style and unparalleled musicianship on the guitar earned him critical accolades – he was declared Performer of the Year by Rolling Stone magazine in 1968, and recognized as World Top Musician of 1969 by Disc and Music Echo.
However, his success had a price. Hendrix had long struggled with alcohol addiction and drug dependence, and he was arrested in Toronto in 1969 due to heroin and hashish in his luggage. At the peak of his popularity in 1970, Hendrix passed away in London on September 18, due to taking 18 times the recommended dosage of Vesparax sleeping tablets.
Hendrix was only 27 years old. Today, he is celebrated as one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century – but he could have accomplished so much more had he not died at such a young age.
Whitney Houston holds the title of the “most awarded female artist of all time†from the Guinness Book of World Records, winning more than 400 awards for her seven studio albums and two soundtrack albums. Over her decades-long career, she sold more than 200 million records around the world and was heralded as one of the greatest African-American female artists of all time.
But throughout her career, Whitney Houston battled a well-publicized addiction to drugs and alcohol, which began in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. Starting at this time, Houston began missing performances and interviews. In 2009, she told Oprah that she had been using drugs consistently throughout the 1990s and 2000s, but attended a 30-day drug rehabilitation program and had become clean. By 2011, however, Houston began using drugs again and re-enrolled in rehab, continuing her struggles with addiction.
On February 11, 2012, Whitney Houston was discovered unconscious at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and she was pronounced dead later that day due to a mixture of drugs including cocaine, Xanax, Benadryl and marijuana, combined with atherosclerotic heart disease. She was 48 years old.
